John C. Campbell Folk School
This non-profit folk school is located in Brasstown, North Carolina. Rand
McNally Atlas features it as one of the top 30 "Best of the Road"
destinations, with a location that is only 2 hours from scenic Asheville, NC
and 2 hours from Atlanta, Ga.
Start with a Studio Tour to get an idea of the fun and creative talents that
are featured at the John C. Campbell School. Pottery, dance, music,
photography, cooking and woodturning are a few of the fun filled activities
you will want to enjoy.
The History Center features a large variety of craft items and photos by
famous photographer Doris Ulmann. You will also see a fascinating
overview of 20th Century Appalachia.
If you like Nature Trails, then you'll want to experience the many walking
trails that wind through the 300 acre campus. The Cherokee heritage of
the Appalachian Area is featured at a creekside trail called Rivercane Walk.
For music lovers, be sure to visit the John C. Campbell School on Friday
nights for their concert series featuring excellent local, regional, and
national acts performing bluegrass, gospel, and Celtic music.
Community Dances are held every other Saturday evening and square
dancing to live music is all the rage.
Visit the Craft Shop for a huge variety of items for sale. You will find fine art
items such as jewelry, woodcarving,ironwork, weaving, woodturning,
pottery, glassworks, baskets, enameling, and furniture. The Brasstown
Carvers also display their work here. Books are also available for learning
about such crafts along with music CDs.
Wonderful meals are also served the the Dining Hall with family style
seating.

In the early 1900s, John Campbell and his wife, Olive went on a tour of the
Appalachian mountains. They decided to try to preserve the lifestyle they
found and hoped to improve the quality of life in the area through
education. They established the school in 1925, offering an education in
the rich Appalachian history along with the pleasure of being in the lovely
mountain surroundings.
